Southampton Publick House Series: Pumpkin Ale

Fall is here. Leaves turning, Dunkin Donuts breaks out the best coffee ever (EVER!), and breweries release unto the masses their Oktoberfests and autumnal seasonals. One such fall brew comes to us from Southampton Publick House as we make our third stop to their gift shop.

SPH Pumpkin Ale harkens back to colonial times, using generous amounts of real pumpkin and traditional pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, “others”). They tried to make a pumpkin ale that tasted like pumpkin, not pumpkin candy, pumpkin. And by Jove, they nailed it.

REAL pumpkin and nutmeg start strong and finish strong. Sweet enough, no bitter finish. The nose isn’t pumpkin pie, but roasted pumpkin. Same goes for the color. It’s a light brown ale, dark orange in the right light. Pair this with a hearty Thanksgiving dinner and there won’t be need, or room, for dessert. Awesome.
